Towards Aesthetics of Science
This paper is meant to contribute to the revision of the notion of science and art as ‘ incommensurable rivals’ whose mutual exclusiveness led to the establishing of polarity between the rationality of science and ‘ irrationality’ of art, between exactness and expressiveness, logic and emotion, measuring and metaphorics, calculation and imagination, etc. Contrary to such an exclusive dualistic scheme, according to which the proper place of the aesthetic is within the art and with no relation to scientific reasoning, the view presented here focuses on the examples that should help revision of such a long-standing stereotype. Aesthetics understood as cognitio sensitivae is not to be affiliated in the first line with merely emotional and intuitive, that is, unrelated to the reason, but is to be perceived as an aspect of cognitive capacity and an element of knowledge, including the scientific one.
