E-learning in continuous dental education
Objectives: Introducing new technologies (as for instance use of teleconference rooms -TCRs) has provided means for distant communication between lecturer and audience which enables for lecturers of different programs to become involved without the need to be actually present. Often aspects of e-learning technology provide students and targeted audiance with means to participate in virtual laboratories, exercises and exams. Methods:Question whether e-learning can replace traditional methods of teaching in field of dentistry, has been risen in many discussions. Study conducted trough the specially formulated questionnaire which was given to participants of “ life long education” process at School of Dental Medicine, tried to give a better insight on that problem. Study involved 53 participants which undertook course of continuous education in year 2006. Questions in this study were designed to answer following questions: Whether e-learning would be beneficial for “ life long learning” process? What are potential benefit of distal learning? What are restrictions of e-learning? In what part should distant learning replace actual lectures? Results: Early result suggest that e-learning could become relevant factor in continuous education of practitioners (88% participants has graded it's potential as high or very high). Potential benefits include: grater choice between educational programs and their wider availability (43% of participants), lover costs of continuous education (35% of participants) and better management of self education process (23%). As for restrictions: greatest of them al is the inability of virtual system to adequately simulate practical courses (67% of participants) and lack of personal “ face to face” contact (14%). Conclusion: This study is ongoing investigation so final results will be presented at the conference but results so far suggest that e-learning can be utilized as an alternative approach to transfer of theoretical knowledge to much wider audience and point out it's inadequacies in transferring of practical skills and procedures.
