Elections and the Structural Foundations of Party Systems
The author argues that the classical paradigm of structural cleavages as foundations of West European party systems, developed by Lipset and Rokkan, can be applied to the transitional regimes and new democracies in South Eastern Europe. His main thesis is that significant differences in the dynamics and quality of democratisation in Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia can be explained by different structures of cleavages and the variable political responses to this structures by political elites.
