The usage of CAD/CAM systems in TMD diagnostic

Objective: Using CAD/CAM systems has become everyday occurrence in modern dental practice. Number of different manufactures present their systems which usually consist of some kind of scanning device – 3D scanner, software for design of prosthetic suprastructures (CAD part) and precise milling device (CAM part). Aim of this study was to investigate possibility of scanning device to input, store and analyze data necessary for accurate diagnosis of Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) of stomathognatic system. Methods: CAD/CAM system used in this study was Kavo Everest CAD/CAM (Kavo Dental GmbH, Leutkirch im Allgäu DE) which consisted of Kavo Everest scan, Kavo Everest engine and Kavo Everest engine. Scan and software module were directly involved in this study. Standard questionnaire of Department of Prosthodontic for TMD patient was completed using casts mounted into articualtor and using 3D scanned data from Kavo Everest system for 10 different pair of models. Statistical analysis was preformed using non-parametric statistical comparison for every parameter involved in the study depending of the nature of the date in every particular case. Results: 152 different parameters were recorded by manual analysis in the articulator and using 3D scanner. There was statistically significant difference found consistently between 16 parameters and inconsistently between 35 parameters. Conclusion: This early results suggest that there is a significant difference between analysis of cast mounted in the articulator and 3D virtual models. Whether that is due to inaccuracy or higher accuracy of either dental articulators or 3D scanning can't be concluded certainly and further research is needed.
