Flash-OFDM in next-generation mobile broadband networks
Flash-OFDM (Fast Low-latency Access with Seamless Handoff - Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is an all IP-based cellular network concept. The only wireless-aware network element is a Radio Router – a combination of a wireless base station and an IP access router, connected to IP core network. Unlike majority of other wireless technologies, Flash-OFDM specifies also higher network layers (MAC and link layer), on top of physical layer definition, as well as their interworking. Air interface is built upon multiple access and modulation scheme of OFDM. Orthogonality between the tones (frequencies) within an OFDM system ensures low intracell interference introduced by multiple user access. Fast hopping across all tones in a predetermined pattern makes it a spread spectrum technology and ensures less overall intercell interference. Special techniques which provide better mobility for OFDM (fast transmission error correction and seamless handoffs) are applied. Smooth make-before-break handoff ensures minimum data loss and delay by establishing a parallel new link with a mobile before releasing the old one. Granularity of resource allocation ensures low latency and efficient resource management.
