Increasing of masonry wall's compression and shear strength

In this paper, test results of unreinforced, reinforced and strengthened walls conducted at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Zagreb, are shown. Two types of tests were done. In first test masonry walls were subjected to vertical compression load (compression walls), and in second test masonry walls were subjected to steady vertical compression stress and variable horizontal shear load (shear walls). All wall specimens were constructed of solid masonry units (bricks) and cement-lime mortar. Testing was conducted on different types of wall specimens: unreinforced, reinforced with steel wires, reinforced with GFRP wires, strengthened with GFRP fabrics and those strengthened with horizontal straps. Test methods were identical for all wall specimens. Carrying capacity was tested and behavior of each specimen during testing was recorded. Comparison between test results was described.
