Waterproofing pedestrian underpasses using tunnel PVC membrane and the Servidek/Servipak system

With the aim of more quickly the construction of traffic infrastructure in urban centres and accompanying structures within the infrastructure, such as pedestrian underpasses, works should be carried out year round. In order to meet this requirement, in the project planning phase, thought must be given to construction technology and the materials used, oftentimes in low temperatures, increased air humidity or on sections of infrastructure with moist or wet surfaces. These facts are particularly important concerning the waterproofing of structures or sections of those structures. This paper presents the experiences in waterproofing pedestrian underpasses in Zagreb in the winter season 2005/2006. The applied waterproofing represents a combination of the Sikaplan 14.6 tunnel PVC membrane system with the Servidek/Servipak system. Waterproofing of the lower deck, vertical walls of the underpass and access ramps for the disabled was carried out using the tunnel PVC membrane. The joints of the vertical and lower horizontal waterproofing and all work extensions was carried out by welding an overlap. Waterproofing of the upper deck of the underpass was carried out using the Servidek/Servipak system, which can be built into 'young' concrete only a few days old. Over the Servidek/Servipak system, asphalt layers bearing course (bituminized grain stone material) and wearing course (splitmastix asphalt) were applied with the same characteristics as in the remainder of the road. The selected waterproofing systems, as shown in this paper, were applied in Croatia for the first time. They were selected due to the set construction deadlines and the weather conditions in effect at the time of construction.
