Study of maize resistance to Gibberella Ear Rot
Gibberella Ear Rot caused by the fungus Fusarium graminearum Schwabe is a serious disease of maize (Zea mays L) grain in Croatia. The two year trials consisted of screening 145 maize lines for resistance and testing 24 maize hybrids under conditions of artificial ear inoculation into the silk channel with F. graminearum. Three most resistance maize lines were selected as potential sources of resistance and several susceptible lines whose resistance needs to be improved. High correlative association was found between mean parent estimates and hybrid estimates (r=0, 82) which is an indication of succesfulness in breeding for resistance.
