Structural Changes during Mechanical Alloying in Al2O3-MgO and MgO-TiO2 Powder Mixtures Induced by High-Energy Ball Milling
High-energy ball-mill processing (HEBMP) has become a very popular research topic, since virtually any composition can be manufactured using a powder mixture of pure elements or compounds (so called mechanical alloying ) or pre-prepared (or available) master alloy powders (mechanical milling or grinding). It has been established that many solid state reactions, which normally occur only at elevated temperatures, can be facilitated by HEBMP. Presumably during milling the production of a large number of structural defects (storing the energy in the material) raised high enough to be able to drive the structural transformation. In this contribution the results of our study of the structural changes during mechanical alloying in Al2O3-MgO and MgO-TiO2 powder mixtures induced by high-energy dry ball milling in air at room temperature, using X-ray diffraction (XRD), are described and discussed.
