Multiculturalism and the Clash of Civilizations
Apart from the basic Samuel P. Huntington's idea that the ideological conflict will be replaced by the civilizational clash in the next century, his thesis on the clash of civilizations has stirred up a broad discussion and polemic responses, mostly based on the ideological background with pro et contra attitudes. In that context, certain ideological stereotypes are used, particularly by Huntingtons opponents who usually label his paradigm as conservative, reactionary, racist, Eurocentric in contrast to the multicultural paradigm seen as progressive, liberal, anti-racist, anti-sexist, toleramt, pluralistic, etc. On the other hand, many multiculturalists share non-European, non-Western cultural legacy, or have leftist, Marxist ideological background. In this debate, however, multiculturalism is presented as an approach that is sharply and totally confronted with the idea of the clash of civilization. Neverthaless, some practical problems, as the Fatwa against salman Rushdie, show compexity of the relationship between multiculturalism and the clash of civilization's paradigm.
