Influence of denture adhesives on muscle activity in complete denture wearers

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of denture adhesives on masticatory muscle activity in different mandibular positions with regard to the condition of denture-bearing area. Methods: Thirty complete denture wearers participated in this study. Surface electromyographic recordings were obtained from elevator and depressor muscles during maximal voluntary contraction, maximal opening and in six different mandibular positions with and without the denture adhesive paste. The effect of the use of denture adhesive was analysed by using paired t-test. According to the condition of denture bearing area subjects were divided into three groups, and the differences in muscle activity between three tested groups were investigated by using analysis of variance design. Results: Results revealed that use of the denture adhesives significantly increased masseter muscle activity in protrusion and working side elevator muscle activity in lateral excursive positions (P<0.05). Denture adhesives significantly increased masseter muscle activity in protrusion in subjects with poor upper denture bearing area (P<0.05), and working side temporal muscle activity in lateral positions of the mandible in subjects with poor lower denture bearing area (P<0.05), when compared to subjects with excellent denture bearing area. Conclusions: The effect of denture adhesive on muscle activity, considering factor “ denture bearing area” was more significant for denture wearers of poor group than of excellent group. This finding suggests that there is a need for pre-treatment evaluation and classification of patients in different group categories while some physical variations require a change in treatment procedures and should be explained to patients prior to prosthetic treatment to help them adjust their expectations.
