Verbotonal method in Russia and Ukraine

Since 1958, various delegations from ex-Soviet republics have visited to the SUVAG polyclinic. A scientific and practical project was signed very quickly regarding the application of verbotonal method at the Institute for human defects of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences, boarding school No.101 of Moscow, deaf-mute children’ s school (Oleny Val st., Moscow) and at a kindergarten in Leningrad (now St.-Petersburg). Physician Avakyan, otolaryngologist (Leningrad) was on scientific trip (probation) in Zagreb, at the faculty of philosophy of the Institute of Phonetics leaded by Professor Guberina. During his stay in Zagreb he developed together with his Croatian colleagues the frequency optimals of Russian language sounds as a basis for the Russian speech audiometric. Physician Alyakrinskiy (Pavlov Institute, Leningrad) studied the physiological bases of verbotonal method together with our specialists. On the basis of scientific and technical co-operation between the USSR and SFRYu the Russian specialists visited the SUVAG polyclinic in the capacity of experts to attend seminars and probation studies ; in particular, Emilia Leangard, Lyudmila Peresvetova, Karpadevich, Melikyan, Lena Minayeva, et al visited these events. Professor Guberina visited Moscow and Leningrad two times, and in course these visits he met and had talks with professors Lurie, Leontiev, Vlasova, Rau, Zhilkin, Levina, Zykov, Lebedevsky, Morozov, physician Belov. He visited various institutes, faculties and schools dealing with hearing and speech communications. The SUVAG polyclinic was attended by prominent specialists from the USSR, such as professors, physicians Sagalovich, Potyakina, Tavartkiladze, physician Kuzmicheva and Matyukhin, the representative of the Society of the Deaf. On the basis of a protocol signed between the Ministry of Health of the USSR and Union’ s secretariat of labor, health and social security of SFRYu, around 170 persons (mainly children) have been sent from the USSR to the SUVAG polyclinic for diagnostics and hearing/speech rehabilitation from 1970 till 1990. This action was initially headed by Mrs. Nikitina, Deputy Minister of Health of the Soviet Union. Positive results of the patients rehabilitation gave rise and stimulated to set up a Center for diagnostics, rehabilitation and training of children with hearing and speech disorders. Thus the Center in the city of Neryungri was founded in 1990 as an affiliate of the All-Union’ s center for audiology and hearing prosthetics leaded by physician Tavartkiladze. Order to establish the Center in Neryungri was signed by First Deputy Minister of Health of the USSR physician Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Baranov. The entire program of establishing the Center was leaded by Valentin Vasilievich Rudchenko, Chairman of the Children Foundation in Neryungri. In 1990, a team of specialists from Neryungri was sent to Zagreb for three-month courses, a verbotonal seminar for the personnel’ s qualification improvement. One year later, Mrs. Molokanova, Svetlana Pavlovna, Chief Specialist of the Ministry of Health of the USSR, arranged the first All-Union’ s seminar for specialists in Neryungri in the field of hearing and speech disorders. Specialists from 11 cities of the USSR (Neryungri, Moscow, Minsk, Kishinyev, Leningrad, Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Blagoveshchensk, Irkutsk, Dushanbe and Yakutsk) participated in this seminar. The specialists were able to see themselves the results of application of verbotonal method in theory and practice. After Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union disintegrated, a new political situation has appeared. Patients were no longer sent from the USSR to the SUVAG polyclinic in Zagreb. It was resolved that time to set up a seminar in the SUVAG polyclinic for qualification improvement. From 1990 till 2003, 160 specialists from the Russian Federation and the Ukraine have attended the general, specialist seminars and seminars for formators (specialists who can use verbotonal method on their own and have the right to teach it). At the same time, 14 groups from the SUVAG polyclinic (physicians, psychologists, defectologists, specialists in phonetic eurhythmics, musical stimulation, linguists, engineers) went to the rehabilitation centers of Russia and the Ukraine and transfer their theoretical knowledge and experience to their colleagues. After the Center in Neryungri has been founded, the application of verbotonal method distributed in Russia and at the Far East. Centers in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Vladivostok, Ussuriysk, Khabarovsk (2), Blagoveshchensk and Yakutsk were set up. A rehabilitation center was opened in Togliatti. The verbotonal centers were then established over the all of the Russian territory, and such a center in Moscow was opened in 1995. Professor Guberina treated the development of verbotonal method in Russia with a great care and attention ; he considered that the future of verbotonal method would be in Russia. In connection with the 10th anniversary of the foundation of verbotonal centers in Neryungri, Kiev and Moscow scientific and practical conferences were held there ; at these conferences, the results of diagnostics, rehabilitation, training and integration of persons having hearing and speech disorders were presented ; the application results of verbotonal method were assessed positively. A Russian Verbotonal Association headed by L.I.Rulenkova was founded. Professor Guberina approved with his resolution the appointment of V.V.Rudchenko (President of the Association for Training and Rehabilitation of Disable Children, the SORDI Association) as the coordinator of verbotonal method in Russia. Our Centers are not only rehabilitation institutions, they are a methodological base for sign language students and sign language teachers. At the same time, seminars for qualification improvement are provided twice a year to specialists working in the field of education and rehabilitation on the basis of the President’ s Program “ Disable Children” . This work is headed by L.A.Cherkasova (Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation). The Russian and Ukrainian specialists participated actively in all of the international symposia held in Zagreb and Roma. It should be particularly noted about the specialists working in the field of education and rehabilitation who participated actively in qualification improvement seminars and prepare/publish scientific papers, bring new solutions, for example, for the rehabilitation of children with infantile cerebral paralysis who have also hearing damages (the ‘ Ariadna’ Center in Togliatti). At this congress holding in Moscow, in addition to the foreign specialists 17 papers and reports were presented by Russian and Ukrainian specialists ; it proves that the method is opened to new technologies in the field of speech communications. This cooperation, such a long way of using the verbotonal method in Russian and the Ukraine, is an evidence of good relations between the Republic of Croatia and the Russian Federation. There are 35 institutions in the Russian Federation now where verbotonal method is being used. This map on the wall is the proof, and it shows clearly the wide application and distribution of verbotonal method over the territory of the Russian Federation.
