Brachytherapy in the Treatment of Prostate Cancer
Brachytherapy for cancer of the prostate can be performed using either low dose rate (LDR) or high dose rate (HDR)techniques. The most widely udes LDR techniques are permanent seed implants, iodine-125 (I-125) or palladium-103(Pd-103).Once implanted in the prostate, the seed remain there.Early reports indicate that HDR monotherapy for early prostate cancer is feasible.Adoption of HDR prostate brachytherapy has been slower than LDR seed implants.Longer follow up and comparative studies are needed to ascertain its position among various definitive irradiation schemes for prostate cancer.
