Vitamin C and anthocyanin content in strawberry fruits influenced by cultivar and harvest date

The study aimed at determining the vitamin C and total anthocyanin content in fruits of different strawberry cultivars in several harvest times in a particular harvest season. The trial was planted in 2003 in the north-western part of Croatia (vicinity of Zagreb) with the following cultivars that were harvested three times in the 2004 season: 'Elsanta', 'Marmolada', 'Madeleine', 'Miss', 'Miranda', 'Pegasus' and 'Honeoye'. Chemical analysis shows significant differences in the vitamin C and total anthocyanin content as a function of cultivar and harvest date. 'Marmolada', 'Madeleine’ and 'Miss’ had significantly higher vitamin C content with regard to 'Miranda', 'Pegasus', 'Honeoye’ and 'Elsanta'. The cultivars 'Madeleine', 'Honeoye', 'Marmolada’ and 'Pegasus’ had significantly higher total anthocyanin content in comparison with other cultivars. The vitamin C content showed the peak in the first harvest and than progressively decreased towards the last harvest, while the anthocyanin showed reverse trend with the highest content in the last harvest. The results obtained confirm that both cultivar and harvest date significantly influence the vitamin C and total anthocyanin content in strawberry.
