Aerobic composting of agro-industrial solid wastes in closed reactor system

Aerobic composting is an important factor of sustainable solid waste management. Application of closed reactor system enables rapid reduction of the volume of bulky agro-industrial solid wastes. Result of composting is the recovery of organic waste material in the form of compost, which can be utilized as organic fertilizer or soil conditioner. For efficient application of composting in a closed system it is necessary to know the reaction rate at which biodegradation occurs in the solid waste, and the extent of degradation achieved. The oxygen consumption rate or carbon dioxide evolution rate are commonly used to indicate the biodegradation rate of organic waste during composting. Furthermore, assessment, investigation and optimization of composting process and the substrate are required. For that purpose mathematical composting models are useful to get an idea of how control measures affect different conditions during the process. However, since models rely on estimated values, it is necessary to verify assumptions used in the models by experimental testing. The objective of this study was to determine biodegradation rate of two selected solid wastes during aerobic composting. Simple empirical kinetic model was used to describe biodegradation rate of organic solid waste, . The reactor was modeled as continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). Efficient fitting procedure was developed taking into account experimental temperature - time curve, mass loss of dry organic substrate and mass of evolved carbon dioxide. Good prediction was obtained using the proposed kinetic model and calculated experimental heat of reaction. It was shown that the degradation rate could be established during composting by use of a simple kinetic model in conjunction with the empirical temperature dependence relationship.
