Role of Korčula’ s Festival for Knightly Dances in the preservation of traditional values.
On the island of Korčula there exist five associations for chain dances with swords (kumpanija and moštra) and two association for combat sword dances (moreška). The authors analyze the justification and new role of these dances in the Festival of Knightley Dances, held since 1997 in Korčula. In a contex where tourism is reviving and perserving cultural heritage, there are also harmful aspects which are important to identify. Although a compatitive spirit is justified in a festival program, it is important to pay attention not to lose the stylistic dancing characteristisc among the sword dance associations bacause of spectacle in presentation. However, the presentation of sword dances in its authentic surroundings, within the Festival schedule is a major and positive cintribution.
