Change of the driver's environment and road traffic safety
Institute of Transport and Communications, in cooperation with the Faculty of Traffic Science, is elaborating methods of changing the driver's environment, to enable drivers for a timely, unmistakable and clear realisation of danger on the road and on the spatial road extension. Outlook of the environment is projected by 3D/4D central projection, making the environment the most perceptible for drivers of low vehicles in the most unfavourable traffic situation. Perspective image takes as the basic measurement the perceptibility angle of specific parts of the driver's environment, and not directly spatial dimensions. Methodology almost completely eliminates the administrative-restrictive approach, which makes it psychologically more acceptable for the drivers themselves. These methods helped improve six extremely dangerous spots on the main road network of the Republic of Croatia. Before these improvements, there were annually over 20 persons killed, several times more injured and accidents resulting only in material damage, at these particular spots. After the improvements, for several consecutive years there were no death casualties in those areas, while the injured rate and the total number of accidents were reduced by more than 80%. By way of illustration, let us just point oput that only one of the intersections underwent minimal construction intervention, with the total cost of the improvements made not exceeding 100,000 USD.
