POSSIBILITIES OF REDUCING HARMFUL IMPACT OF RAILWAYS ON THE ENVIRONMENT
The railway features systemic advantages over other transport modes. This refers primarily to the harmful influence on the environment and the energy consumption per unit of carried cargo. Since the competition on the transport market is increasing, the railway has to work on improving its services. The advantages have to be maximally used and the drawbacks featured by the railways as compared to other transport branches have to be reduced to a minimum. The paper deals with the measures undertaken to further reduce the harmful impact on the environment and to reduce the energy consumption. From the aspect of environmental impact, the possibility of reducing noise and the emission of harmful components of exhaust gases are considered. Special focus is on the possibility of reducing the emission of harmful components of exhaust gases by returning the exhaust gases and by subsequent processing of the Diesel engine-generated exhaust gases. Here, the focus is primarily on the problem of reducing the emission of NOx and particles which are being limited by law, and a significant reduction of allowed emissions is planned in the future.
