Electrochemical cleavage of S-N bond of anhydro-2-azacephams at mercury electrode

The electrochemical reduction of anhydro-2-azacephams at mercury electrode was studied. In all cases the S-N bond was cleaved. The products of the reaction consist of corresponding azetidine-2-sulfinate and azetidine-2-sulfonate anions. The electroreduction is complicated by the adsorption of reactants and products and it is very likely that an organo-mercury compound is formed as an intermediate in the process.
