The prevalence of chlamydiosis (Chlamydophila psittaci) in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Blood samples were taken from 38 pigeons and 20 intensive breed chickens. Cloacal swabs were taken from 275 birds: 19 feral pigeons, 33 free living pigeons, 198 intensive breed chickens and 25 parrots. ELISA (IDEIATM PCE Chlamydia) and EIA (Clearwiew Chlamydia MF) tests were used for detection of Chlamydophila psittaci antigen in cloacal swabs. For detection of specific antibodies against Chlamydophila psittaci in birds sera indirect immunofluorescence test (IIF) (Chlamydia psittaci spot Biomerieux&reg ; ; ) and complement fixation tests CFT were used. 45, 5% intensive breed chickens, 12% free living pigeons, 8% parrots investigated with ELISA and 12, 5% intensive breed chickens and 3% free living pigeons investigated with EIA were positive on Chlamydophila psittaci antigen respectively. All feral pigeons were negative in ELISA. All feral pigeons and parrots were also negative for presence of CP tested with EIA. Total fifty-eight birds were tested serologically on presence of specific antibodies against CP. 37 % of free living pigeons (14/37) were positive using IFF test. Intensive breed chickens were all negative with IIF test. All birds were also negative on CP using CFT test. Although the number of investigated birds limits the scope of investigations the study showed the presence of Chlamydophila psittaci among different species of domestic and free living birds in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This preliminary data are the first of this kind from that part of Europe.
