Experimental and theoretical investigation of the autoionization dynamics in the excited collision complex He*(2 3S)+H(1 2S)
We present angle-dependent electron energy spectra for the autoionization process He*(2 3S)+H(1 2S) leading to Penning (He+H++e– ) and associative ionization (HeH+(v+, J+)+e– ) obtained from high-resolution experiments and from ab initio theory. Nearly complete agreement between the two sets of spectra is demonstrated. Non-isotropic electron emission is observed, reflecting angular momentum transfer to the electron and a correlation between the heavy-particle dynamics and the internal emission anisotropy. The ab initio calculations include angular momentum dependent resonance-to-continum couplings and reveal a strong contribution of autoionization into an electron d-wave.
