Fatigue Life Assessment of Welded Ship Structural Details - Part 2: Numerical example
The paper presents a numerical example of the fatigue life assessment of a welded structural detail based on the hot-spot stress approach. The side longitudinal/web frame connection of a modern double hull suezmax tanker, well-known for its fatigue susceptibility, is analyzed. The procedure includes several calculation steps, first of which covers the evaluation of the ship response on regular wave, employing the linear strip theory. Stresses at studied hot-spots are determined by global and local finite element model analyses, utilizing the submodel technique. Long-term (hotspot) stress range distribution is determined by the spectral method and fitted to a Weibull distribution. Fatigue strength of the structural detail is described by the notch S-N curve.
