Hydrated fly ash with SiO2 fume and/or portland cement addition. Reactions in pastes and strength development in mortars
Reactions of hydrated fly ash with SiO2 fume and/or portland cement addition were studied on paste and mortar samples. Composition of hydrated fly ash: Ca(OH)2, approx. 50 ; CaSO4, approx. 9 ; CaCO3, approx. 5 ; free CaO, approx. 5 wt% ; the rest is glass composed of Ca, Al, Fe, Si, Mg, Na and K oxides. Strength development in all mixes resulted from C-S-H gel and ettringite formation. Hydrated pastes contained also calcium carbonate ; Ca(OH)2 was present only in samples with portland cement addition. The sample with portland cement addition had the highest 3-day compressive strength (3.3 MPa) ; 90-day compressive strength was highest in the sample with SiO2 addition (31.7 MPa).
