The lattice constant of Al-rich matrix in equilibrium with (metastabile) Guinier-Preston zones and beta(Zn) equilibrium phase is followed by X-ray diffraction method during the decomposition of two Al-(8 and 24) at% Zn alloys. The respective decomposition states are determined by means of small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopic investigation. The most striking result of these investigations is that the measured lattice constant for the Al-rich matrix in equilibrium with (metastabile) Guinier-Preston zones is considerably lower than expected according to literature data. This effect is explained by assuming that in the Al-Zn alloys containing a sufficiently dense system of GP zones the lattice spacing inside the zinc-rich GP zones and the zinc depleted matrix does not differ as expected.
