Synergistic extension of multiple criteria methods
Existing methods for multiple criteria choice reflect both the main characteristic and at the same time their disadvantage from western culture and philosophy - the way of excluding from their thinking the effects that overlapping contingencies might have on decision choices. Methodologies developed to this date have apparently not yet incorporated such contingencies. It would appear, however, that many synergistic and overlappingdependencies do exist among decision criteria. One has but to bring them to the surface and deal with them. In explicit utility function methods too many simplifying asumptions are usually made. The added dilemma of dealing quantitatively with overlappingattributes would complicate these explicit utility methods even more. On the other hand, the pairwise comparison way can establish values and priorities in attribute hierarchies without necessitating explicit utility function construction. Although existing hierarchy methods seem to have dealt only with non-overlapping attributes, by finding and incorporating overlapping combinations it should be possible to include synergistic effects. An extension of the AHP to include these effects is addressed and analyzed with pertinent examples from problem areas of tourists choosing places for their vacation.
