Diatoms of Lake Vrana
Lake Vrana was studied over a two-year period to determine the composition of diatom community in a karstic freshwater shallow lake. Phytoplankton and phytobenthos samples were taken bimonthly during the first year and monthly during the second year. All samples were fixed with formaldehyde, cleaned using sulphuric acid/potassium nitrate method. For diatom identification Zeiss Axiovert microscope was used and additional identifications of small species were performed using scanning electron microscope Tescan and transmition electron microscope FEI Morgagni 268D. During the investigation period 54 diatom species were identified. Dominant were Synedra Ehrenberg species while genera Mastogloia Thwaites ex W. Sm., Fragilaria Lyngbye, Amphora Ehrenberg ex Kutzing and Navicula Bory were present through the most of the investigation period. Since Lake Vrana is in close proximity of the Adriatic Sea and is connected to it through artificial narrow channel, some number of brackish/marine species was identified (e.g. Mastogloia baltica Grunow, Entomoneis paludosa (W. Smith) Reimer, Craticula halophila (Grunow) D. G. Mann) in addition to some characteristic freshwater species (e.g. Aulacoseira granulata (Ehrenberg) Simonsen, Cyclotella meneghiniana Kützing, Meridion circulare (Greville) Agardh). This paper presents the first checklist of diatoms in Lake Vrana.
