Just-Noticeable-Distortion of Still Images Influence in Satelite Communications Based on Human Visual Perception

We considered satellite communication for application to telemedicine. The telemedicine area of interest was pulmonary X-ray. We experimented with human visual perception of grey images, performed three experiments and calculated the just-noticeable-distortion (JND) for the experimented case in MatLab. Results are shown graphically. Our results have shown that JND can lead to misdiagnosis in the case of transmission of pulmonary X-ray images over satellite channel, and we concluded that the area of telemedical use of JND profile must be carefully chosen. We proposed minimal-fatal-distortions (MFD) to be used in telemedicine instead of JND. Still images are considered only, the spatio-temporal JND profile was not of interest in our research.
