Effect of Polygonal Hole on Stress Distribution in Cylindrical Shell under Axial Compression
In this work is analyzed a thin cylindrical shell weakened by a hole in form of six-sided polygon with rounded corners, under axial compression.. The stress concentration factor around a hole is defined by proposed analytical solution based on the application of complex variable functions and conformal mapping combined with the iteration method. The experimental results are obtained by photoelastic frozen stress method. On the basis of analytical and experimental solution the curves of stress concentration factor around the polygonal hole are comparatively drawn. Good agreement of analytical and experimental results is found. The proposed analytical solution could be used for the practical calculations.
