Soil contamination situation at surroundings of oil-gas wells in the region county of Koprivnica-Krizevci
One of the key indicators of a country's economic development is energy consumption ; on the other side, ever increasing energy consumption causes environmental pollution on a global, regional and local scale. At the beginning of the 20th century coil and wood accounted for 90% of the total energy consumption, whereas at the end of the century that percentage dropped to only 30%. Nowadays oil is the major energy source and accounts for around 35% of the total world energy consumption. Oil is consumed worldwide, while possible environmental pollution problems always remain at the local level – at the oil/gas well site. This is especially true for the soil which is, besides the air and water, the most endangered environmental medium. While air and water pollution have been widely addressed and included in the primary school curriculum, the soil contamination issue has been highly neglected. This is probably due to the consequences of pollution of such mediums. Consequences of water and air contamination sometimes cross state borders and are main news in all media, whereas consequences of soil contamination mostly remain the problem of local community. For these reasons this paper will present the results of the 20- year research on the influence of oil/gas wells on the soil in the region of Koprivnica-Krizevci County.
