Serum lipids and beta hydroxybutirate in dairy cows during a dry period and an early lactation
Concentrations of serum cholesterol, triglycerides, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) and beta hydroxybutyrate (BHB) were determined in dairy cows, in purpose of estimating an energetic metabolism on an onset of lactation. The research was carried out on Holstein cows in first, second, third and fourth lactation. Samples were taken in three experimental periods: 14 days before expected calving (n=23), 10th and 30th day after calving (n=19 and 23, respectively). Examined parameters were determined in blood serum by autoanalyzer (SABA 18, AMS, Italy), using commercial kits (cholesterol and triglycerides – Herbos Dijagnostika, Croatia ; NEFA and BHB – RANDOX Laboratories Ltd. UK). Results of the research showed statistically significant increase of concentrations of NEFA (1.10 vs. 0.68 mmol/L) and BHB (1.41 vs. 0.61 mmol/L) (p<0.05 and p<0.01, respectively) and decrease of concentration of triglycerides (0.15 vs. 0.31 g/L ; p<0.0001) on 10th day after, considering 14 days before calving, while the concentration of cholesterol was not changed (2.53 vs. 2.51 mmol/L) in this period. On the 30th considering 10th day after calving, concentrations of NEFA (0.76 mmol/L) and BHB (0.62 mmol/L) significantly dropped (p<0.01), concentration of cholesterol (3.69 mmol/L) significantly rose (p<0.01) and the concentration of triglycerides (0.16 g/L) stayed on the same level. On 30th day after calving, compared to 14 days before calving, concentrations of NEFA and BHB were not different (p<0.05), concentration of triglycerides was lower (p<0.0001) and concentration of cholesterol was higher (p<0.001). A statistically significant positive correlation between BHB and NEFA was determined considering all data (r = 0.71, p<0.0001), in dry period – 14 days before calving (r = 0.85, p<0.0001) and 10th day after calving (r = 0.75, p<0.0001) ; 30th day after calving correlation was not found (r = 0.12, p>0.05). The obtained results indicate to increased mobilization of body fat stores on the 10th day of lactation, which is related to rapid increase of milk production and energetic disturbance in the investigated period.
