Overgrowth of carbonate mineral phases with different crystal structures from Trepca, Stari trg mine, Kosovo
Sample of a white carbonate mineral from hydrotermal vein in Pb-Zn mineral deposit Stari trg, Trepca, Kosovo was investigated. An X-ray diffraction analysis, thermal analysis and SEM with EDS analysis were performed on this sample. X-ray diffraction data show the presence of two or even three carbonate phases. One carbonate phase has calcite structure, and another one has dolomite structure. Thermal analysis data, show presence of calcite and manganese rich carbonate phase. The most valuable data were carried out with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) which performed twelve point elemental analyses of the sample. Six different phases were observed on the sample. Chemical analysis was performed for each of six phases. First phase contains calcite with a very small amount of Mn. Second phase is overgrowing rhombohedron of the first phase. It contains Ca, Fe, Mg and Mn cations (ordered by their concentration). The phase with dolomite structure is identified using X-ray diffraction. The third phase contains Ca, Mn, Mg and Fe cations, Mn > Fe, what corresponds to kutnahorite. The fourth phase is probably the same phase as the second one and contains Ca, Fe, Mg and Mn cations. The fifth phase is porous, probably partly dissolved carbonate containing Ca and Mn. The sixth phase fills cavity developed as a consequence of dissolution of early cristallized carbonate and is probably the last crystallized carbonate phase consisting of Mn and Fe, and a small amount of Ca. Such a different composition of carbonate minerals could be also a reflection of oscilation of cation concentration in solution during the crystallization.
