The occurrence of giant bivalve Alatoconchidae from the Yabeina zone (Upper Guadalupian, Permian) in European Tethys
The Permian large bivalve family Alatoconchidae characterizes a tropical shallow marine fauna intimately associated with the Tethyan warm-water-adapted Verbeekinidae fusulines. The Velebit Mountains in central Croatia is one of the eight areas in the world that yielded Alatoconchidae, as recognized early in the 1970s. In addition to the Neoschwagerina Zone (Wordian, Middle Guadalupian) originally described, we newly found Alatoconchidae from the Yabeina Zone (Capitanian, Upper Guadalupian) for the first time in Europe. In the Brusane area of the central Velebit Mountains, Alatoconchidae occurs in two stratigraphic levels of the Velebit Formation, that are composed of black fusuline/algal wackestone/packstone with abundant Yabeina syrtalis. Although fragmented, the Alatoconchidae retains unique morphology with lateral flange and prominent prismatic external layer in the double-layered shell. The present result confirms for the first time in Europe thus in the western Tethyan domain that the stratigraphic range of the bivalve family extends up to the Capitanian (Upper Guadalupian) as well as in the superocean Panthalassa.
