Metamaterial-based Waveguides: Principles and Applications
One of the new physical phenomena noticed recently is backward-wave propagation below the cut-off frequency of the basic TE or TM mode of the waveguide filled with anisotropic uniaxial single-negative (SNG) metamaterial. This phenomenon could be used for the development of the miniaturized waveguides, waveguide components (directional couplers and resonators) and waveguides antennas, transverse dimensions of which can be arbitrarily smaller than a half of the wavelength. It is also possible to use an array of the resonant electric and magnetic scatterers as new open electromagnetic guiding structures with no conductive walls. The operation of these open subwavelength guiding structures is completely analog to the operation of recently heoretically proposed plasmonicsphere-based optical guiding structures. In this talk, both the theoretical basis of subwavelength metamaterial-based uiding structures and the experimental results and applications achieved so far will be reviewed.
