Micro and Nanoparticles of Zeolite for the Protective Textiles

Materials for human performance, such are medical, protective and sports, is one of nine themes according the European Technology Platform for the Future of Textiles. The new textile applications for achieving such properties led in last few years to rapid growth of antimicrobial and UV protective finishes. Antimicrobial finishes results in textile material to impart durable freshness and a feeling of safety and wellbeing of consumers, while UV protective clothing protect from harmful ultraviolet radiation. In the present paper micro and nanoparticles of natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) have been applied to cotton fabrics in different treatments for achieving high level of antibacterial and UV protection. One of these products has high fraction of microparticles (90 %), while the other one has a high fraction (80 %) of nanoparticles. These micro and nanoparticles of clinoptilolite, with high portion of SiO2 (60-67 %), were produced by tribomechanical processing in the European patented machine. For this purpose cotton fabric was mercerized, treated with azalide compound for antimicrobial effects and with zeolite for expected and achieved better antimicrobial and UV protection. Antimicrobial test with the use of gram positive Staphylococcus aureus and gram negative Klebsiella pneumoniae microorganisms, showed high antibacterial effects when azalide was applied. Application of zeolite resulted in higher antimicrobial protection, with difference between micro and nanoparticles. The high UPF results confirmed that natural zeolite has important role in achieving high level protection of textiles. Excellent results of antimicrobial and UV protection have been accomplished even after washing process.
