Surface Free Eenergy of Pretreated and Modified Cotton Woven Fabric

Textile wettability and adsorption are the most important phases in textile finishing processes. These interface phenomena that occur at solid-liquid interface, like textile fabric and water solution, depend to a large extend on the kind and magnitude of the solid surface free energy. Changing the number of functional fiber surface groups, e.g. by pretreatment and modification of fabric, affect the distribution of surface charge, resulting in change of fabric surface free energy and wettability. Therefore, in this paper, plain woven cotton fabrics were enzymatically desized, enzymatically scoured with alkali and neutral pectinases, chemically bleached, mercerized and cationized during mercerization. The influence of these pretreatment processes and modifications to cotton fabric interface phenomena was investigated throughout the change of fabric surface free energy and contact angle. Contact angle was measured on DataPhysics OCA 20 instrument. Disperse and polar components of surface free energy were recalculated from contact angle measurements and according to Chibowski thin-layer method as well. The surface free energies were discussed in a quantitative way. It is well known the fabrics treated in wet conditions undergo some structural changes ; therefore the degree of polymerization, DP for cotton cellulose was determined as well as mechanical properties of pretreated and modified cotton fabrics.
