The effect of gas standardisation on exhaled breath condensate pH and PCO2
Background: The influence of ambient air and analytical sample preparation, pose a major problem on pH and pCO2 determination in exhaled breath condensate (EBC). The aim of the study was to assess the impact of the argonization method applied on the results of pH and pCO2 determination in EBC. Subjects and methods: EBC was collected in 13 healthy children-control, 22 asthmatics and 18 children with gastro-esophageal reflux, GER. Two EBC samples were obtained from each patient and argonized by two methods, i.e. argon overlining and argon bubbling (gas standardization). Results: The values of pH and pCO2 showed statistically significant differences according to the method of sample argonization. The values of pH were significantly lower, and the values of pCO2 significantly higher in argon-overlined EBC than in gas-standardized EBC. Mean pH of the argon-overlined EBC was in neutral range in healthy children, and in the acid range in children with asthma and GER. Conclusion: When pH and pCO2 can be determined immediately upon sampling, we consider that EBC sample argon overlining should be performed.
