Influence of Precursor Hydrolysis on Morphology and Properties of Epoxy-Based Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Materials
Epoxy-silica hybrids were prepared from previously hydrolysed 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO), cured at 25 °C and 60 °C, and postcured at 120 °C. Materials cured at 60 °C show finer morphology. Hydrolysis of GLYMO improves final mechanical properties due to strengthening effect of inorganic network, regardless of its morphology. Acid-catalysed system cured at 60 °C shows improvement in all properties, probably due to hydrogen bonds between Si-OH groups and polymer matrix. Residual acid acts as centre of chain-scission, shifting degradation to somewhat lower temperatures.
