Study of the PET depolymerization during recycling
In this work PET/HDPE blends and PET/HDPE/E-M blends prepared with EPDM/HDPE masterbatch (E-M) and PET/HDPE/PE-M prepared with PET/HDPE masterbatch (PE-M) were studied. Polymer blends were prepared by extrusion and were further characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to determinate crystallization (Tc) and melting (Tm) temperatures. The degradation, i.e. depolymerization of the PET in studied blends that appear during the extrusion process was also followed by determination of the concentration of carboxyl groups by Pohl titration and by FTIR spectroscopy. The results of concentration of the carboxyl groups in polymer and changes of crystallization temperatures indicate presence of formed polymer radical with end carboxyl groups as result of depolymerization of PET during the recycling (extrusion) process.
