A Propulsion Plant Simulator and its Applications in the Engine room
Over the last decade the world vessel fleets have become highly sophisticated and technically advised. However, due the human error, disasters still occur. Operational failures and miss-communication can easily cause major accidents or expensive breakdowns with several economical consequences for the concerned. The best way to acquire practical experience is to learn from real life in a real time, but today the efficiency requirements do not allow for this kind of onboard education. Hence the training has to be carried out on a simulator. Practising decision making in a simulator environment where decisions and their effects are monitored opens a unique possibility to evaluate the effect of the decisions. Proper simulator training will reduce accidents and improve the efficiency, as well as give the engineers the necessary experience and confidence in their job simulation. This methodology has enabled the students, teachers and instructors to analyze the dynamics of the vessel*s electric system-net and its parts without jeopardizing the analysed system. A propulsion plant simulator and its various applications will be discussed in this paper.
