"Hidden" Abuse of Children in Family and School

Modern trends in education, from kindergarten to universities, have its foundations in humanistic orientation, which should provide opportunities for development of needs of all attendants throughout the education. However, sometimes behavior in relations among parents and children and teachers and students can be considered as verbal but "hidden" abuse, which phenomenon includes numerous inappropriate and emotionally rude form of adults' behavior toward children and young persons. Such a behavior is sometimes "difficult" to recognize or it provokes fear of the response to the problem in victims, who eventually rather decide to suffer in silence. The research, conducted on a sample of 180 students recruited from various courses and years of study, showed that a great number of examinees experienced various forms of abuse not only in their families but by their teachers as well. Insults, humiliation, stigmatization, underappreciation, discouraging are some of the behaviors that can provoke a variety of violent responses in children and young persons, as well as permanent negative feelings towards institution or person that actually abused them. The research results indicate the need for redefining some traditional approaches to the education and teaching of children either in family or in school, primarily those referring to the need of establishing mutual positive and reversible, democratic and human relations, which will eliminate repressive pedagogic practice. Respecting child's elementary rights is just one in a series of conditions to be met during child's growing up.
