Pre-accession economic issues and relevance of Lisbon goals for Croatia
The paper aims to analyse the economic aspects of the pre-accession process and the prospects and challenges of Croatia’ s fast track integration into the EU. It focuses on preparations for negotiations and negotiating structures in Croatia. After negotiations for the EU membership started, Croatia is facing the challenge of the next phase of relations with EU. The key issue is to carry out negotiations successfully, prepare the country for the EU membership and examine in advance the economic impacts of future membership while attempting to avoid (or minimise) negative consequences of accession. On the other hand, as the first candidate and negotiating country for the EU membership from the Stabilisation and Association Process (SAP) and a forerunner from the region for EU integration, Croatia is expected to demonstrate its ability to fulfil the remaining criteria for the start of negotiations. However, although the assessment of Croatia’ s readiness to integrate into the EU will depend on the success of internal reforms, the ability and quality of their implementation, the external framework might also significantly help the country to pass this exam more successfully.
