Relationship between Positive and Negative Affect and Measures of Tolerance to Shiftwork
The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between Positive and the Negative Affect and some tolerance to shiftwork measures in groups of workers working in 8-hour and 12-hour shift systems. The group of 8-h shiftworkers (N=59), 12-h shiftworkers (N=133) and a group of non-shiftworkers (N=58) were administered the PANAS scale and the Survey on Shiftworkers. The canonical analyses showed that, irrespectively of shift system, the measures of psychological and physical health were associated with nonspecific unpleasant mood i.e. heightened the Negative Affect combined with lowered the Positive Affect. Chronic fatigue was associated with the mood ratings in shiftworkers, but not in non-shiftworkers.
