Quality of family life: relationship between parental meta-emotion and family functioning
Aims: The main goal of this investigation is to evaluate the contribution of parental meta-emotion to explain the family functioning. The aim was also to examine the relationship between mothers and fathers perception of estimated indicators quality of family life. It is possible that dimension of parental meta-emotion are related to parental estimation of family cohesion and satisfaction within the family as well as in the parental-child system that was in previously investigation estimated (Gottman, et al, 1996 ; Brajša-Žganec, 2002). Methods: The investigation included 506 intact families. Mothers and fathers separately completed instruments measuring three dimension of meta-emotion (adapted and shortened version from Gottman, et al, 1997), family cohesion (Bloom, 1985), and family satisfaction (Smilkstein, 1978). Results: Mothers and fathers dimension of meta-emotion are in positive correlation (0, 30-0, 45) as well as mothers and fathers estimation of family cohesion and satisfaction within the family (0, 45 ; 0, 50). Sociodemographic variables and three dimension of parental meta-emotion together explain the little but the lager part of the variance of parental estimation of satisfaction within the family than parental estimation of family cohesion. Fathers dimension of meta-emotion are the best predictors of family satisfaction than mothers dimension of meta-emotion. Conclusions: Dimension of parental meta-emotion are related to the parental estimation of family cohesion and family satisfaction as well as parental meta-emotion have validity in terms of the quality of the parental-child interaction and child psychosocial adjustment. The meta-emotion variables are related to the family’ s entire philosophy of emotional communication and quality of family functioning. But feelings of the parent’ s own emotion is negative dimension of meta- emotion for Croatian parents. Our findings highlight the importance of providing investigation the determination of quality of family functioning in different countries.
