Privatization and Organizational Commitment

The process of privatization of the economy is one of the most important issues in the transformation of the societies in Central and Eastern Europe. Production and productivity were very low under communist system. Many explanations have been offered for this state of affairs. One is that employees experienced difficulties identifying with the organization, because of political and economic reasons. It was assumed therefore, that dismantling the socialist characteristics of the production system would increase organizational commitment. In this study 603 employees in Croatian privatized and public companies were questioned to see whether those in privatized employment showed a higher organizational commitment. Each subject filled in questionnaire regarding personal characteristics, job characteristics, work satisfaction and experiences at the work, and organizational commitment. Organizational commitment appears to be determined by the experiences employees have as regards their work, rather than by personal or work characteristics. The difference in organizational commitment between public and private companies that is apparent at the first sight, disappears when the effects of ten covariates are taken out. This lack of support for the hypothesis may be explained by the fact that at the time of measurement, privatization had only recently taken place.
