The study of Chlamydophila psittaci outbreak in budgerigars
In two weeks period 50% mortality was reported in one breed of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulates). Adults as well as young’ s older than 14 days died. The laboratory investigation confirmed infection with Chlamydophila psittaci. In the same period some members of the owner’ s family have got respiratory sings of atypical pneumonia. Because of this, the owner decided to eliminate the whole breed, which gave as an opportunity to investigate the outbreak in more details. Samples of blood, swabs form conjunctiva and cloaca and samples of embryonated eggs were taken before birds were euthanized. For the confirmation of chlamydia infection, several different diagnostic methods were used: direct and indirect immunofluorescence, commercial immuno enzyme tests and molecular detection. Based on clinical and pathological findings and the results of diagnostic tests, facts that could be important for spreading of the disease within the breed are discussed. The findings are important for the prevention of human infection.
