Hydrogeological and geophysical research of an island's karst aquifer – the Čarsko Polje case study
Čarsko polje is a typical karst polje, situated in the middle of the island of Korčula, southern Adriatic Sea, Croatia. The water supply of this part of the island is not satisfactory and karst aquifer is being investigated. By now, geological and hydrogeological mapping has been performed, as well as geophysical sounding. In the 1980s research started with 33 geoelectrical sounds. After that 19 shallow exploratory boreholes and two deep wells were drilled. Achieved quantities were not sufficient (less than 1 l/s) and water supply was not established. After some 20 years of research gap, in 2006 researches are continued with the time domain electromagnetic sounding and hydrogeological surveys (detailed mapping, in situ hydrochemistry, catchment determination). Researches are still going on, and considering all data as well as the experience from other Adriatic islands, it is possible to presume that the final result could be positive.
