Population Trends of the Rook Corvus frugilegus L in the City of Zagreb

The distribution and number of colonies of rooks Corvus frugilegus L. was studied on five locations in the City of Zagreb. Within the scope of rook monitoring during the nesting period a rook distribution map marking important localities for each colony was made. The fieldwork was carried out in the areas of the City of Zagreb where the birds were breeding. In these areas the observations of rook nesting were made. Their entering the urban ecosystems as well as their adaptability to specific conditions throughout the City of Zagreb and the surrounding areas was confirmed by this study. In comparison to the previous researches carried out at the same locations, this study showed that the number of nesting rooks in all five locations has increased. When in flocking phase, many of these very noisy birds made tremendous amount of noise and were harassing both people and animals in the area. The most important public health concern associated with rooks is the accumulation of faecal droppings at roosts. For each district we have recommended measures which should be implemented in order to protect the health of people and birds.
