Measuring Output Acoustic Power of an Ultrasonic Surgical System Using the Calorimetric Method

Output radiated power of an ultrasonic processor system concentrating high power ultrasound energy in the sonotrode tip has been estimated using the calorimeter method. The tip of sonotrode is considered as a point source in linear and nonlinear working regime, depending on the applied electrical power. At the beginning, the input electrical impedance into electromechanical- acoustical system has been measured near the series resonance frequency when the tip of sonotrode was loaded (water) or unloaded (air), assuming linear behaviour of the system. Using equivalent circuits approach, the electroacoustical efficiency was calculated and the radiated acoustical power could be easily calculated knowing the applied electrical power. The output acoustical power has been measured using the calorimetric method where the tip of sonotrode was placed into several heat isolated boxes, and it was assumed that all radiated acoustical energy is converted into heat. The problem considering input electrical and radiated acoustical power in nonlinear working regime is that the waveforms of voltage and current are distorted and electroacoustical efficiency factor can’ t be easily calculated. Using the results of measurements, the correlation analysis between applied electrical power, temperature increase in the loading medium and radiated acoustical power has been done.
