Differences in presentation and in-hospital outcome between patients with first acute myocardial infarction and patients with recurrent infarction.
Objective: To assess differences on age, risk factors, clinical presentation and in-hospital mortality after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) between patients with first AMI and patients with recurrent AMI. Design and methods: The retrospective study was based on the original database made at the Department of Internal Medicine, General Hospital, Bjelovar, Croatia in the period between September 1996 and January 2001. All 436 patients admitted with a diagnosis of AMI were studied. 90.14% of all patients were in group with first AMI and 9.86% were patients with recurrent AMI. Results: (Table) Conclusions: In group of patients with recurrent AMI we found significant differences in gender, history of hyperlipidemia and diabetes mellitus. These patients presented more often with pulmonary edema on admission. Overall in-hospital mortality was slightly, but non-significantly higher in this group.
