Stroke after myocardial infarction: uncommon but fatal complication.
We studied the incidence of stroke in 436 patients (pts) after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) treated in Bjelovar General Hospital from September 1996 to January 2001. In group of pts according to presence of stroke we used t-test and χ ² ; ; ; test to compare the differences in demographic characteristics, risk factors, and inpatient mortality rate. 2.5% of our pts (n=11) had stroke (5/282 men vs. 6/154 women, p=0.151). The group of pts with stroke after AMI were older than group without stroke (75.9± ; ; ; 5.9 vs. 64.5± ; ; ; 11.6 years ; p=0.001) and there were significant differences in frequency of atrial fibrillation (AF ; 36.4% vs. 12.2% ; p=0.040), heart failure (HF ; 90.1% vs. 48.5% ; p=0.005) and inpatient mortality rate (90.9% vs. 18.8%, p<0.001). Older pts with AF and HF deserve particular attention and may benefit from prophylactic anticoagulation.
